AFL Round 7
After a round littered with upsets and great games, the AFL heads into Round 7 this weekend, kicking off Friday night with a massive clash between the Saints and GWS. We preview some of the key games of the round below.

St. Kilda vs Greater Western Sydney (Friday, 7.50pm AEST)
Both the Saints and Giants had great wins in round six over tough opponents and we’ll be looking to back it up as they square off at Etihad on Friday night. The Saints overcame Hawthorn in Launceston to take their season record to 3-3 while GWS won one of the games of the year on Friday night when they were victorious over the Bulldogs by 2 points in Sydney.

The Saints boast one of the best looking injury lists in the league at the moment, with only David Armitage missing from their best 22 and set to return from a groin injury in a few weeks. The Giants, on the contrary, have a host of injuries that they’ll be dealing with throughout the week with regular senior teamers in Stephen Coniglio, Phil Davis and Shane Mumford all to undergo a test this week. Lachie Whitfield and Toby Greene will also miss through suspension.

The Saints impressed last weekend but it’ll be a massive step up in class here as they take on the Giants. The selection woes that could face the Giants this week have me thinking that the Saints will keep this one relatively close, they are also a really good side at Etihad.

TIP: Greater Western Sydney 1-39 – $2.25 at Sportsbet

North Melbourne vs Adelaide (Saturday, 1.45pm AEST)
Hard to remember a more dominant start to the season than Adelaide are having at the moment. They are 6-0 through the opening rounds and are leading the competition in nearly every major statistic. A domintant performance over another undefeated team in Richmond on the weekend solidified their position as premiership favourites and they’ll get a much easier task this weekend when they face 1-5 North Melbourne.

North Melbourne claimed their first win of the season as they narrowly escaped the best individual performance of the season so far by Gary Ablett by beating Gold Coast by 13 points on Saturday night. Ben Brown was the standout performer as he slotted 6 goals while Shaun Higgins was back to his Bulldogs best, racking up 28 disposals.

As much as I think the Roos have been a bit unlucky this year and their record probably doesn’t reflect their standard of play, it’ll be a really tough test for them this week and I expect the Crows to come out on top here.

TIP: Adelaide Crows -37.5 – $1.91 at Ladbrokes

Collingwood vs Carlton (Saturday, 2.10pm AEST)
The headline game of the round sees Collingwood host Carlton in their 125th anniversary game on Saturday night. In what should be a near sold out MCG, both teams will be hunting their second win on the trot and their third win on the season.

The Collingwood midfield decimated Geelong on Sunday and the forward line finally stood up and kicked straight as the Pies were 29 point winners over the Cats. The tagger made its triumphant return to the AFL as Pies midfielder Levi Greenwood put the clamps on Joel Selwood to keep the Geelong captain to just 17 disposals.

Carlton also claimed a massive win last weekend as they downed the Swans by 19 points on Saturday at the MCG. It’s a telling win for the Blues but we think Collingwood should have too much in the tank here with arguably one of the best midfields in the league at their disposal.

TIP: Collingwood 1-39 – $2.10 at Sportsbet

Western Bulldogs vs Richmond Tigers (Saturday, 7.25pm AEST)
Another massive game of the round sees the Western Bulldogs host the Tigers at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night. The Tigers suffered their first loss on the weekend to a tough Adelaide outfit while the Bulldogs were also beaten by arguably the next best team in the comp in the Giants.

The Dogs, in my opinion, have been very fortunate to have a 4-2 record so far this year after sneaking away with wins over the likes of North Melbourne, Collingwood and Sydney. Much like their run at the end of last season to win the premiership, it’s been a few players that have dragged them over the line every week. Richmond, as much as everyone hates to believe it, have greatly improved their team defence and overall pressure and I think their a massive chance against the Dogs here.

TIP: Richmond +18.5 – $1.91 at Ladbrokes

Sydney vs Brisbane (Sunday, 1.10pm AEST)
Anyone who would have tipped the Swans to start the 2017 AFL season 0-6 would have been a very brave person, but with a host of injuries as well as experienced players out of form the Swans are winless through the first six rounds and reeling going into this weekend against Brisbane. We thought they might have a chance to get to 3-5 with games against Carlton, Brisbane and North Melbourne coming up but a loss to Carlton on the weekend has put the brakes firmly on their season.

Brisbane put up a strong performance against the Dogs two weeks ago and while they were beaten comfortably by Port Adelaide on the weekend, they have been able to keep a lot of their games close this year. We just can’t justify an 0-6 team giving a 40.5 point head start ever.

TIP: Brisbane +40.5 – $1.92 at Sportsbet
