2017 AFL Round 19 Betting Tips

July 25, 2017 by Posted in AFL Tips

We hit on two out of four bets last weekend in the AFL to keep our decent run alive making it six rounds in a row where we have managed an even weekend or better. We’ll look to get back on the winners list this weekend as we present our preview and betting tips for Round 19 of the AFL season below.

Hawthorn vs Sydney (Friday, 7.50pm AEST)
Two old rivals who had horror starts to the season come into this game as two of the most in form teams in the competition. The Hawks are coming off two great performances against GWS and Geelong followed by a thumping of Fremantle on the weekend in the lead up to their clash with the Swans Friday night.

The Swans have lost just one game since their loss to Carlton back in round six gave them an 0-6 record and have now firmed to second favourite to win the 2017 Premiership at just $5. Another win over a good side at the MCG would complete their return to the dominant side we saw in 2016.

Always a close game between these two teams but we think Sydney should be too strong here. Sam Reid is a chance to return to the side after injury while Kurt Tippet dominated in the reserves on the weekend. The Hawks still have their fair share of injury concerns with Grant Birchall, James Frawley and Cyril Rioli all likely not to play again for the season. Good signs for the Swans.

TIP: Sydney 1-39 – $2 at Sportsbet

Port Adelaide vs St Kilda (Saturday, 4.35pm AEST)
Port Adelaide have been impossible to get a read on throughout the season so far. They currently sit 5th on the ladder but have yet to beat a team inside the top eight and just copped a tough loss to the Demons on the weekend.

They’ll welcome the return to Adelaide this weekend against the Saints, who have been arguably one of the worst teams playing in South Australia in recent history. St Kilda were demolished by Adelaide over there earlier in the year and back to back losses to Essendon and Sydney has seen them drop out of the eight, good signs for Port Adelaide.

A couple of positives for the Saints is the return of full forward Tim Membrey from suspension and the injury of star Port Adelaide forward Chad Wingard. However, it likely wont be enough for the Saints to get over the line and we like them to make it six losses in a row to the Power.

TIP: Port Adelaide 1-39 – $2.10 at Sportsbet

Western Bulldogs vs Essendon (Sunday, 1.10pm AEST)
Really interesting matchup here as the red hot Bombers face the Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Both teams are coming off big wins on the weekend and both will be desperate for a win to make a real push at top eight contention. The two teams, along with West Coast and St Kilda all sit on 36 points and are all fighting for eighth spot on the ladder with Melbourne sitting in seventh with 40 points.

It’ll be a massive test for the Dogs, who haven’t really beaten a quality side since their win over Richmond all the way back in Round 7. Since then their only wins have come at the hands of St Kilda, North Melbourne, Carlton and Gold Coast. Essendon are playing like one of the in form teams in the comp at the moment with huge wins over St Kilda and Port Adelaide and a great game against Sydney where they just fell short.

Both teams love to play a quick brand of football through the middle of the ground so the perfect conditions at Etihad should suit both. Essendon have looked great there, however, with the wins over PA and St Kilda and the form of their big men in Michael Hurley, Joe Daniher and Cale Hooker it’s hard to bet against them here.

TIP: Essendon to win $1.82 at Ladbrokes

Collingwood vs Adelaide (Sunday, 3.20pm AEST)
A season defining win probably came at the wrong time for Pies fans on the weekend. After losing 5 of their last 6 games, Collingwood looked set in full tank mode at the beginning of the fourth quarter against the Eagles before they kicked the last five goals to win the match.

They’ll get a much harder challenge this week, however, as they come up against the rampaging Adelaide Crows at the MCG. The Crows have won their last four matches and look back to their early season form after some shaky games in the mid rounds. Star midfielder Brad Crouch will be out for this game with a fractured cheekbone which could pave the way for veteran Scott Thompson to return to the Adelaide side.

Collingwood also have their injury concerns with Travis Varcoe and Darcy Moore likely to be sidelined for the matchup. Even on the back of an inspired perforamance against the Eagles, hard to make a case for Collingwood in this one, especially after the game Adelaide played against Geelong on the weekend.

TIP: Adelaide -18.5 – $1.92 at Ladbrokes
