2017-18 EPL: Manchester United vs Manchester City Preview

December 10, 2017 by Posted in Soccer Tips

Here we are! It is not just Manchester that is eagerly awaiting this fixture but entire England, if not the world. Manchester United’s derby with Manchester City on Sunday, December 10 at Old Trafford will be the headline match of week 16 of Premier League (PL).

It is not exaggerating to say that every other club will have one eye on this fixture; not just because of their traditional rivalry but also to see if United can defeat City and breathe life into the morbid PL title chase. For the record, City are eight points ahead and a win this weekend will all but kill any chances for the chasing pack.

Season so far
For all the criticism that Jose Mourinho receives, United have been the nearest challengers for City. With 35 points from 15 games (W11, D2, L2) they are still in with a chance to bring their neighbours down in the title race. Thanks to his side, there is still life in the PL race and Mourinho will hope that United can build on their sensational 3-1 win over Arsenal. Only worry for the hosts is the three-match suspension for Paul Pogba which starts with this game. To be honest, his absence tilts the scales in favour of the visitors!

What to say of City’s season so far! They are yet to lose a match and only Everton were able to pinch points from them. 43 points from 15 games (W14, D1) gives them a cushion of eight-points over nearest rivals United. The ever-demanding Pep Guardiola would push his side for another three points not just to kill United’s title hopes but also to continue his pursuit of excellence. A midweek loss to Shakhtar Donetsk was surprising, although most of the regulars were rested from that clash.

Key Stats and battles
United are currently on the longest unbeaten home run in the PL (24 games – W14, D10) with their last defeat at Old Trafford coming against – wait for it – Manchester City in September 2016! Overall, United have been unbeaten in 40 home games (W29, D11) and are just one game away from setting a new record.

City have now won 13 successive PL games which is a joint-record alongside Chelsea (2016/17) and Arsenal (2001/02). United have lost seven of their last 12 PL games against City (W3, D2, L7) although they have lost just one of their last five derbies (W2, D2, L1).

Jose’s United may be impregnable at home, Pep’s City are just breath-taking! Despite being run close in their last three PL matches, City look so strong that it would be a surprise if they lose. More so, with no Pogba on the other side! Back the visitors to win at odds of 2.25 (William Hill).

TIP: Manchester City to win – $2.25 at William Hill

Raheem Sterling is a reborn player under Pep surprising everyone with his eye-for-goal this season. He has three goals in the last four matches and looks good to find the net this weekend. Back him at odds of 3.39 (bet365).

TIP: Raheem Stirling to score – $3.39 at bet365
