2017-18 EPL: Manchester United vs Chelsea Preview
The destination of English Premier League title this season looks a foregone conclusion as Manchester City have built a fairly commanding lead at the top. However, the battle for the second spot is still up in the air as Manchester United and Chelsea are fighting it out, with literally nothing to separate them.
The two sides meet at the Old Trafford on Sunday, February 25th, in a clash that could settle the bragging rights between the two warring managers Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
Season so far
Manchester United have started the season on a brighter note, but have since faded away. Even when City gave them a chance to reduce the margin at the top, the Red Devils refused to take advantage and are still a long shot from their city rivals. After 27 games the hosts are second (56 pts) which is 16 points behind the table-toppers.
The defending Champions Chelsea have had more troubles than United, although Conte seems to have stopped the rut for the Blues in the recent matches. With 53 points from 27 matches, they are barely holding to their fourth spot, with Tottenham Hotspur breathing down their neck one point behind.
United have lost ground on their hold of the second spot by losing two of their last three games, winning only one. They could start the game potentially in third place, should Liverpool win their game against West Ham, and a loss in this game could mean further erosion of their prospects.
Chelsea also have a lot riding on this match as a loss could see them shifting out of the top-four while a win could cement their position in the top-three. A very interesting fixture, to say the least!
Key Stats and battles
The last four meetings between the sides have all ended in home wins, three of which were won by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Four of the last six meetings at Old Trafford have been drawn.
United have conceded just five home Premier League goals this season, which is the best in the league.
In six of the last seven domestic games for United, there have been under 2.5 goals scored.
Prediction
The war of words between the two managers makes this an interesting game as Mourinho and Conte aren’t the best of pals. Neither would like to lose out to their foe, but considering the troubles Mourinho has with his key playmaker Paul Pogba, Conte could edge him out. Back Chelsea to win at odds of $3.40 (William Hill).
TIP: Chelsea to win – $3.40 at William Hill
Alvaro Morata could be key for the visitors and may once again outshine his counterpart Romelu Lukaku. Back the Spaniard to find the back of the net anytime in the game, at odds of $3.25 (Ladbrokes).
TIP: Alvaro Morata to score – $3.25 at Ladbrokes
