2017-18 Big Bash League: Renegades, Sixers & Stars Preview

December 14, 2017 by Posted in Articles

As we build towards the Big Bash League kicking off on Tuesday, we looked at how defending champions Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers are stacked up. We continue our preview today by looking at Melbourne Renegades, Sydney Sixers, and Melbourne Stars.

Melbourne Renegades

Barring season two where they reached the semi-finals, the Renegades have never finished above fifth. It is about time that they do something to improve their final position. That explains their effort to balance their squad.

The addition of Brad Hodge and Brad Hogg will add serious experience to the squad while the presence of West Indian imports Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine brings a lot of excitement.
In Aaron Finch and Cameron White, the side has two of the most destructive T20 batsmen of all-time and even if Finch misses some games due to international commitments, there is enough back-up in the squad.

And in bowling, the side will be led by Kane Richardson with Hogg and Jon Holland leading their spin stocks. Is that enough to win the title? At least, they start as one of the favourites!

Player to watch: Sunil Narine
X-Factor: Dwayne Bravo
Prediction: Top four at odds of $1.44 (CrownBet)
Odds: $6.50 at Ladbrokes

Sydney Sixers

The Sixers are the inaugural BBL Champions but have struggled to be consistent thereafter. Although they reached the finals of BBL 04 and BBL 06, there is a bit of uncertainty at the club after years of sustained success.

The older hands in Brad Haddin and Ryan Carters have retired while the signing of Peter Nevill may not bring huge excitement in the ranks. Jason Roy and Sam Billings have been re-signed, but their stay will be cut in the new year once the Australia-England ODI series starts!

Moises Henriques will lead the side and the experienced all-rounder is one of the most under-rated players in this format. With the consistent Sean Abbot leading the bowling charge, the Sixers have the ability to go deep.

Their chances could well hinge upon their ability to build around the performances of their star players. They should challenge for a place in the final-four.

Player to watch: Nic Maddinson
X-Factor: Moises Henriques
Prediction: Top four at odds of $1.44 (Ladbrokes)
Odds: $7 at Ladbrokes

Melbourne Stars

Are they the second-most consistent side of the BBL history or a side that can’t go beyond the semis? Apart from the Scorchers, the Stars are the only side to have reached the semi-finals in all the seasons. However, the stars have never aligned in their favour and they have reached just one final.

Will that change this year? Ben Dunk is added to the squad while John Hastings takes the reins. Englishmen Kevin Pietersen and Luke Wright continue to add firepower while there is enough depth in the squad.

However, Hastings will be pressed to cope in the second-half due to international commitments and the frequent team changes could hinder their hopes of going deep. Back them to make the top four.

Player to watch: Ben Dunk
X-Factor: James Faulkner
Prediction: Top four at odds of $1.43 (CrownBet)
Odds: $6 at William Hill
