Wimbledon is just around the corner and the world’s most coveted tournament will start in the Women’s draw with all the attention focused on Serena Williams. When the first ball is tossed on Monday night – June 27th – the American will try to equal Steffi Graf’s record of 22 Grand Slams.

It is a tribute to her consistency and longevity that the 34-year-old Serena is still counted as one of the favourites. She lost both the Grand Slams this year in the finals, which is disappointing as she holds herself to the highest of standards. The defending Champion will look to thwart off attempts to dethrone her attempt to win a record seventh title here. At odds of 2.5 with Sportsbet, Serena is still the top bet for the title.

Challenging Serena would be the Spaniard Garbine Muguruza. The defending runner-up is the second seed here and comes on the back of an impressive French Open title. The biggest challenge to her will be to maintain the high standards and expectations that are placed on a Grand Slam champion. The 22-year-old has already demonstrated her skills on the grass last year in a run that took her past some noted names. Can she do it again? At odds of 6.0 with Sportsbet, she is a good value bet for a dark horse in the tournament.

World number three Agnieszka Radwanska will look to improve on her disappointing season but this is one tournament she likes the most. A finalist here in 2012, she has also reached the semi-finals in 2013 and 2015. She seems to be there or there-abouts in Grand Slams. She could be in with a chance of reaching the semi-finals.

Among others, Australia Open Champion Angelique Kerber will look to regain her early season form and stay in the hunt for bigger challenges. Simona Halep, Victoria Azarenka and Madison Keys may create an upset or two to make things interesting but do not look good enough to go the distance. Leading the Aussie campaign would be Samantha Stosur and Daria Gavrilova with hopes that the 32-year-old Stosur can continue to keep the flag flying.

Serena has floundered with three consecutive attempts at equalizing Graf’s record. Will she be fourth time lucky or will the Women’s draw find another competitor to derail her campaign? Watch out the action unfold from Monday night.
