2016 Wimbledon Open Men’s Preview

June 26, 2016 by Posted in Betting Tips

The most prestigious and coveted Grand Slam – the Wimbledon – starts on Monday, June 27th and the men’s draw will have one big question. Can Novak Djokovic continue his march towards a calendar Grand Slam or will somebody be able to stop him?

Even the biggest Djokovic critics will agree that he is the best in the business right now. He currently holds all the Grand Slams and will enter the tournament on the back of an impressive win in the French Open. No one in the open era has won five major titles in a row and Djokovic has a chance to achieve that. He is at odds of 1.83 with Sportsbet, and this makes him the favourite with the bookmakers as well.

The biggest challenge for the Serb will come from local hope Andy Murray. The Brit has teamed up with coach Ivan Lendl again in an attempt to win his second Wimbledon. He has won the Queen’s tournament for a record fifth time this week and will hope to carry the good form into Wimbledon. At odds of 3.5 with Sportsbet, he is the closest competitor to Djokovic.

Roger Federer has missed the French Open – the first Grand Slam since 1999 – and is without a title this season. The Swiss maestro is a sentimental favourite but will struggle to get past the semis where he is expected to meet Djokovic. Odds of 11.0 with Sportsbet make him a distant favourite and it is difficult to see him winning here.

Among other contenders to watch, the Canadian Milos Raonic is an exciting prospect. He has teamed up with John McEnroe in an effort to go that extra mile in Grand Slams. He reached the finals of the Queens before losing to Murray but looks a good bet to be an outside for reaching the finals. Another player to watch out would be the youngster Dominic Thiem who is fast emerging as a player to watch this season.

Among the Aussies, Bernard Tomic and Nick Kyrgios will spearhead the campaign and look good to reach the quarter-finals. Both players like this surface and have the ability to do well. The absence of Lleyton Hewitt would be the first since 1998.

Wimbledon gets underway on Monday night and promises to be exciting as ever. The spotlight on Djokovic’s season makes this year’s tournament interesting. Can the Serb sustain his charge?
