2016 Wimbledon: Men’s Final Betting Preview
The 2016 Wimbledon Championships has seen plenty of surprises as we are now left with the last two men standing. Is there one more upset awaiting as Canadian Milos Raonic will hope to spoil the home expectations and shock Andy Murray for the title on Sunday night.
Raonic teamed up with John McEnroe prior to this tournament and was expected to be one of the underdogs to reach this stage of the tournament. His talent was never in question but his ability to stay longer in Grand Slams was a question mark – which he successfully brushed aside here to become the first Canadian to reach a Grand Slam final.
Raonic was helped with the surprise early loss of Novak Djokovic which opened up the half for him. But take nothing away from the Canadian who was at his imperious best against crowd favorite Roger Federer in the semi-finals. This is his first Grand Slam final appearance and managing nerves could be a tricky challenge for him.
Murray will have none of those problems although he will have to manage the huge expectations of his home crowd. He has been very consistent so far in the year reaching all three Grand Slam finals. Having lost to Djokovic in both the finals this year, Murray will hope for a better turn of things with his nemesis missing from action.
The 2013 Wimbledon Champion will hope to become the first home player since the legendary Fred Perry to have won the All England crown more than once. This is also his first final where he won’t be facing either Djokovic or Federer, so it’s a tremendous opportunity. His form seems to be clicking at the right time and he will hope not to become another big seed casualty here.
Recent form and experience puts Murray in the driver’s seat but tennis rarely plays by the form book. Raonic has already showcased his new-found consistency with performances that should worry Murray. The Brit is the bookies’ favourite and there isn’t much value in backing him to win. There is something in Raonic’s game that says that he could cause another upset and odds of $4.00 at Ladbrokes are enticing. Expect this match to go the full distance though!
This will be the first Wimbledon final since 2002 to not feature any one of Djokovic, Federer or Nadal. Can Murray align the stars in his favour or will Raonic make the most of his best chance at an elusive Grand Slam?
