2016 US Open: Women’s Betting Preview
Flushing Meadows in New York is all set to host the 2016 U.S. Open from 29th August and we look ahead to what’s in wait for us in the Women’s side.
It would be crazy to not mention Serena Williams when we talk about any Grand Slam. Tied with Steffi Graf on 22 Grand Slams, Serena hasn’t been at her best and another drab outing at Rio is raising doubts on her tired legs. Though Serena pulls her performance by several notches in Grand Slams, she could be in for further shock at the U.S. She is still the favourite at odds of $2.40 (CrownBet), but keep an eye on others.
This is where the German Angelique Kerber (pictured above) comes into frame. 2016 has been a breakthrough year for the current world number two and after three major finals, she looks set to break through. There is never a doubt on her ability to clinch a Grand Slam but it’s a matter of her consistency. Odds of $10 (CrownBet) make her a distant favourite, but on current form she looks set to carry herself to the semi-finals at the least.
If current form translates to victory, then Olympics Champion Monica Puig of Puerto Rico should be top of the list. The win at Rio was nothing short of sensational as the 22-year-old played with great composure throughout the tournament, out-hitting many illustrious rivals. The bigger question of course is if she can bring the same game to New York. If you are an aggressive punter with a penchant to back distant favorites, go for Puig!
Though her form tapered off, French Open champion Garbine Muguruza still remains a threat this fortnight. She too had a tournament to forget at Rio but Muguruza has the game to win this year U.S. Open. Looks a good punt for the last four but anything beyond, will require a slice of luck.
Then of course there are the usual suspects like Victoria Azarenka, Simona Halep and Petra Kvitova but on current form, none of these look to have the required consistency to win a Grand Slam. If you are willing to look beyond the usual spectrum, keep an eye on Elina Svetolina (Serena’s conqueror at Rio), Karolina Pliskova (who won at the New Western) or even Roberta Vinci (last year finalist).
On the whole, U.S. Open Women’s tournament promises to be an exciting affair with a lot of possibilities. It still is Serena versus others but with Serena bringing dwindling form to the Flushing Meadows, there is renewed hope for the challengers.
