2016 US Open: Men’s Final Preview

September 11, 2016 by Posted in Betting Tips

2016-us-open-mens-final-tennis-previewIt’s not a dream match-up for the organizers but when Novak Djokovic takes on Stanislas Wawrinka for the crown of U.S. Open men’s Grand Slam Championship, it’s not a bad one either! Both of them have navigated in contrasting styles and it promises to be an interesting finale at the Flushing Meadows on Sunday.

How did they reach here?

Call it a quirk of fate or the turn of fortune he badly needed, Djokovic had one of the easiest passages to the final. He spent just over six hours on the court so far this tournament thanks to three of his opponents retiring due to various reasons. The fitness of the Serbian World number one himself was a doubt and he even had to get medical attention for both his arms in the semis. Novak is still not fully fit but as is his wont, his tenacity is driving his success. Rule him out at your own peril!

If Djoko has spent the least amount on court, Wawrinka must have spent the maximum. The Swiss third seed had a straight sets victory in only the first two rounds and had to expend lot of energies henceforth. He was on the verge of getting knocked out by Daniel Evans in the third round but avoided defeat miraculously. His path to the final wasn’t of help either – Stan had to defeat red-hot Juan Martin del Potro and Kei Nishikori in the last two rounds to book a date with Djoko. Stan was of course helped by the fact that Andy Murray fell by the wayside but take nothing away from the Swiss star.

Djokovic leads Wawrinka 19-4 overall and should start the final as hot favorite. But, the last time they met in a Grand Slam final, Stan won in four sets at the 2015 French Open. On top of it, there is a cloud of uncertainty on the fitness of the world number one. Djoko would be gunning for his 13th Grand Slam singles title while Stan is chasing his third.

Djoko is still the hot favorite in odds market – odds of $1.34 (sportsbet) on his victory while Stan starts as the underdog – odds of 3.3 (Sportsbet). If Wawrinka can stay true to his potential and test Djoko, there’s a chance that his brittle fitness may give away. We are tempted to punt on Wawrinka’s win and if you are a little more aggressive take the odds of $7.50 (Sportsbet) on Stan winning three sets to one.
