The 2016 Super Rugby season has reached the knock out stages as the regular season has concluded. The final 8 teams will be battling it out to reach the semi-finals. Continue reading for our Super Rugby Quarter Final preview and betting tips.

Brumbies vs Highlanders (Friday 6pm AEST)

The Highlanders were able to defeat the Chiefs in an entertaining match last week, however it wasn’t enough for the side to move into a position to grab a home semi-final. They will be on the road against the Brumbies this weekend in a match that they are considered favourites despite travelling across the ditch.

The Brumbies were able to return to winning ways as they defeated the Force on home soil. However, it was another disappointing performance considering the side was considered favourites to lift the Super Rugby trophy earlier in the season. Their back line is down on form and making uncharacteristic errors. They weren’t able to combine for any points in the second half against the Force and they were relatively lucky the Force weren’t able to capitalise on their opportunities.

This won’t be an issue for the Highlanders as they are the best side in the competition at absorbing constant pressure and making the most of their limited chances. It was a perfect example on the weekend when they copped an onslaught of pressure throughout the opening 40-minutes against the Chiefs, only to come out in the second half and score on vital possessions to earn the victory. We are predicting this to happen again this weekend as their defence will be very hard to crack whilst the Brumbies are low on confidence.

Hurricanes vs Sharks (Saturday 5.35pm AEST)

The Hurricanes were able to pull off their best win of the season at the most important time. They defeated the Crusaders 35-10 on the road to earn a bonus point victory that has put them on the top of the table. This will give the side their second straight minor premiership and they will have home field advantage all the way to the Grand Final if they continue to earn victories.

They are taking on the stingiest defence in the competition this weekend with the Sharks conceding the least amount of points of any team. However, the Sharks attack is their problem as they have had issues threatening the top sides of the competition. They don’t tend to chance their hand or throw the ball around and stick to a more European style of rugby where they will look to take advantage of the points on offer through the boot and attempt to earn the victory on the back of their discipline and defence.

However, we don’t believe that strategy will be successful this weekend, especially against Hurricanes outfit that was at its best last week against the Crusaders. If the Canes are able to put any sort of pressure on the Sharks, they should be able to crack their defence. This will put the Sharks behind on the scoreboard and force them to play a style of rugby that isn’t accustomed to them and eventually the Hurricanes will be able to run away with the contest.

Lions vs Crusaders (Sunday 12.30am AEST)

The Crusaders loss against the Hurricanes on the weekend was a costly one as it has forced them into having arguably the toughest opponent this weekend. The lions were destined to have top spot on the ladder but they decided to rest their entire starting line up for the trip to Argentina to take on the Jaguares. It was a smart decision as it will give the side an opportunity to freshen up whilst they don’t have to face any jetlag from the long trip. However, the side is in danger of a slow start as they will have had two weeks between matches but the home crowd should be able to counteract that.

The Crusaders are an experienced side that is well adjusted to the finals. Meanwhile this is the first time since 2001 this franchise will feature in the knock out stages when they were formerly known as the Cats. It has been a long time between drinks for fans and they won’t want to see their side eliminated in the first week.

These two sides have the best forward packs in the competition and it will be difficult for either side to get the advantage against their opponent in this area. It will likely come down to the two sides back lines and their defensive efforts. If the Crusaders are able to pile on some early points it will put a lot of pressure on the Lions outfit whilst the Crusaders will remain calm even if they find themselves behind on the score board. We are predicting the Crusaders attack to be slightly better than their opponents as they will come away with the victory.

Stormers vs Chiefs (Sunday 3am AEST)

The Chiefs were another side where a loss has put them in an awful position. The Chiefs were sitting on the top of the New Zealand conference but their defeat at the hands of the Highlanders has forced them to travel to South Africa this weekend to take on the Stormers.

The Chiefs have one of the better attacks in the competition. Although they have only scored 50 more points throughout the year, you need to take into account the opposition they have faced. The New Zealand Conference is far tougher than the South African one and yet the Chiefs were still able to score a large amount of points whilst their defence has also been strong.

Meanwhile the Stormers allowed the Kings to score 24-points against them on the weekend on their home soil. If they don’t lift their defensive tempo it could be a long day for the Chiefs but we believe the match will be closer than expected. The home field advantage will give the Stormers a much needed edge but it won’t be enough to see them get over the line as four New Zealand sides will advance into the semi-finals.
