London 2012 Olympics was a huge disappointment for Australia who collected just eight gold medals and 35 medals in total. The Rio 2016 Olympics are about to begin and we take a look at the chances of the best of the Aussies and whether they will bring home gold.

Starting with athletics, Sally Pearson who won gold at London would have been a huge medal hope but her injury-withdrawal casts a shadow over the athletics teams prospects. Our best bet will be long jumper Fabrice Lapierre who’s a World Championship silver medalist.

The Aussie men’s basketball team comprises of regular NBA players like Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova. There is a realistic chance of them snatching the nation’s first ever medal.
Boxing has never been the strongest point for the Green and Gold but watch out for the pugilist Shelley Watts in the Women’s light 60 kg category.

Canoeing and Kayaking has a strong Aussie presence with London silver medalist Jessica Fox a strong contender. Australia are also the gold-defending men’s K4 1000m team.

The Cycling arena has always witnessed Australian success. Anna Meares and Annette Edmondson are the top contenders whilst Caroline Buchanan and Sam Willoughby are strong hopes in BMX racing.

The Australian women’s football team is a medal prospect too but will have a tricky group featuring Canada and Germany. Australia are prime contenders in both men’s and women’s hockey. They will face strong competition from The Netherlands but gold is not beyond the teams and the men’s will enter the tournament as favourites. Back them at odds of $3.60 with Sportsbet to win Olympic gold.

Rowing saw Australia gather four medals at London, however none of them were gold. They will now aim to row one step better as World Champion Kim Brennan (Women’s single sculls) and the men’s quadruple sculls loom as the strongest contenders. At odds of $1.53 with Sportsbet, Brennan is a short priced favourite and the quadruple sculls are placed at odds of $1.80 with Sportsbet.

Women’s rugby team is a top bet too with odds of $2.00 with Ladbrokes. They are the favorites and current World Champions.
Sailing gave three gold medals to Australia in London 2012 and should once again be a multi-bagger. Swimming was a huge let down last time but there are high hopes on the group this time around, led by Cameron McEvoy, Mitch Larkin and the Campbell sisters.

After the struggles Australia had in London, the teams went back to the drawing board and spent a lot of time to appropriately prepare for Rio 2016. Will the efforts bear fruit? The next two weeks deliver us the answer!
