The final week of the regular 2016 NRL season has arrived with teams jostling for position on the ladder in what should be an exciting week which we preview in our Round 26 betting tips.

Canterbury Bulldogs Vs South Sydney Rabbitohs (Friday, September 2)

The Bunnies have made a late surge. They racked up wins against the Sharks, the Warriors and the Knights. They’ve been stringing together sets and playing the brand of football that won them the NRL Premiership a couple of years ago. Unfortunately for the boys from Redfern, its too late. Its been a long season and they’ve missed the finals boat.

The Doggies are in desperate need for a win. They’re coming off back to back losses, where we saw the Broncos and Cowboys run a muck against an underwhelming Bulldogs defence. Despite a lucky intercept try early in the first half, the Bulldogs were on the back foot for the majority of the 80 minutes against the Cowboys last week.

Both sides will go into this one unchanged. The Bulldogs are in a tough spot. They need the momentum of a pre finals win, but are safe in the top 8 so they can afford to coast and not risk injury or suspension.

The Bunnies, meanwhile, are riding out the clock as their seasons are over. While their season may be over, they certainly aren’t playing like it. We’re expecting the Bunnies to upset the Bulldogs and drop them back to 8th position.

Melbourne Storm Vs Cronulla Sharks (Saturday, September 3)

With the AFL on an absurd pre-finals bye, Melbournians will be rushing to AAMI park to watch the two top teams in the NRL battle it out for the minor premiership this Saturday night.

Melbourne Storm are currently leading the competition on 40 points with the Cronulla Sharks nipping at their heals on 39 points. Coming off a tough loss to Brisbane, the Storm will be looking to bounce back strong and reclaim the minor premiership they thought would have already been secured.

Brisbane came out swinging last week and the Storm just weren’t ready. Two quick tries from the visitors had Melbourne on an unfamiliar back foot. Tofu Harris and Jesse Bromwich were the standouts for Melbourne with 260 meters between them and 63 tackles.

Cronulla was in a spiral until they clinically dismantled the Roosters on Saturday night. The lights were shining and the Sharks didn’t disappoint. Benny Barba, James Maloney and Paul Gallen combined to lead the dominant second half in their 37-12 victory. It can be said that the Roosters lost their legs, but the Sharks never let up. The ‘G trai’n was in full motion with 211 meters and a try.

Back-to-back home losses looks very unlikely for the Storm. They’re at full strength and have a almost unblemished home record. This will play like a final and will be worth watching regardless allegiance.

North Queensland Cowboys Vs Gold Coast Titans (Saturday, 3 September)

JT and his merry men have found some much-needed form in the last two weeks. The Cowboys are hosting the Titans this weekend and will look to notch up another home victory before a grueling finals campaign. Off the back of two convincing wins against the Warriors 34-6 and the Bulldogs 24-16, the Crowboys are in fourth spot but will need to win if they want to stay there.

The Titans started the season on a mission. They led the competition early but have since dropped off significantly. The Titans are currently in 8th position and look likely to play finals, but there is a scenario where they miss out so they cant afford to lose this one. David Shillington, David Mead and Lachlan Burr have all been named on an extended bench for the Titans trip to Townsville.

This is the worst possible situation for the Titans. They need to win to guarantee a spot in the finals – and not only win, but win in Townsville. The Cowboys don’t lose at home often and when they do, its always spectacular. With the inclusion of Matthew Scott, the Cowboys are now at full strength and will simply be too much for the Titans.

Tip: North Queensland Cowboys 13+ – $2.15 at CrownBet

Wests Tigers Vs Canberra Raiders (Sunday, September 4 at 2:00PM AEST)

On Sunday when the Canberra Raiders face off against the Wests Tigers, there are plenty of possibilities. The Raiders could win and move to 2nd position. They could also win and stay in 3rd. They could lose and stay in 3rd, which would see the Tigers move to 8th but only if the Cowboys defeat the Titans. The timing of this one, however, means we’ll know the potential ladder result before the kickoff.

For us its all down to whether the Tiger have a chance at continuing their 2016 campaign or not. If its a no, then the Raiders will win, if its a maybe then we will be in for a pretty good game down in Leichardt.

The Tigers will regain the services of Chris Lawrence returning to the second row and Kyle Lovett being named on an extended bench. Curtis Sironen has been omitted. After a solid win against the Warriors last weekend, the Tigers will hope to strike early and keep their finals hopes alive.

The Raiders are on a nine-game winning streak and that doesn’t look like changing any time soon. Much of the Raiders’ success has come from the early attack. Canberra has been very good at shifting the ball out wide early in sets usually on the 3rd tackle. This has often meant the defence isn’t spread and the Raiders have a loose man.

The Tigers are hopeful at best that a win will see their season continue. A win that is very unlikely against the Raiders. I believe the Leichardt effect will tighten the gap between these two sides but the Raiders will end the Tigers season on Sunday afternoon.

Tip: Canberra Raiders 1-12 – $3.00 at CrownBet
