2016 NRL Round 23 Betting Tips

The 2016 NRL season is well and truly marching towards the pointy end, but there are still plenty of very interesting match-ups to come this weekend! Make sure to check out our latest NRL betting tips as we take a look at Round 23.

Brisbane Broncos Vs Parramatta Eels (Friday, 12 August at 7:50PM)

When the Broncos finally won last weekend, we were honestly surprised. They’ve been struggling for a while, but managed to string several strong sets together in their 12-8 win over the Dragons. After starting well and controlling the first half, Brisbane was looking the goods before letting the Dragons back into the game late in the second half.

For the first time in weeks they held their own defensively, managing 392 tackles. The biggest improvement came in the form of completed sets. It was a massive effort when you consider in the last month they’ve dropped 31 incomplete sets. That being said, when in control of the ball they can be devastatingly effective. Sam Thaiday was a man on a mission, after starting majority of the season from the bench Thaiday was clearly out to show he isn’t done yet. With a huge 196 metres 29 tackles and scoring the opening try of the game, Thaiday set the tone and his teammates followed.

Michael Gordon kicked a clutch field goal to give the Eels a one point win over the Sea Eagles. The Eels want the season to be over. They’re playing for nothing and seemingly losing in every endeavor – both on and off the field. A win last week after their very public rejection by Jarryd Hayne would have instilled a lot of confidence and resilience heading into the massive task of rebuilding they have ahead of them.

If the Broncos want any shot at a home final, they need to win this one. Its no secret they’ve let their season slip away, but its not too late to stop it slipping quietly into the night. With no changes to their line up, and the Suncorp effect, we’re going to stick with the Broncos to again string sets together and subsequently get the win.

St George Dragons Vs Cronulla Sharks (Saturday, 13 August at 7:30PM)

The streak had ended, the pressure was off, they were still in control… Then the raiders came to town. Cronulla was devastated last Saturday when the Canberra Raiders pushed the Sharks around the park and systematically dismantled the game style that had them on a 17-game wining streak. The Sharks were out played in every department. Its not as though they didn’t have the ball – Cronulla had majority of possession and were simply ineffective. This week they face off against the Dragons. Michael Ennis, Ricky Leutele and Joseph Paulo have all been named to return for the Sharks. Cronulla’s attack was certainly missing Ennis out of dummy half last week and with Ricky Leutele being one of the most dominating off the bench players this season, he will add a lot as well.

St George was on the losing end of a Sammy Thaiday onslaught last Thursday night.
To the Dragons’ credit, they never gave up and did make a late drive towards victory.
Josh Dugan returns to the side this week at fullback, and the combination of Tyson Frizell and Joel Thompson making up a new look second row, are both vital parts of the Dragons defence.

If the same Sharks show up, the Dragons will have plenty of opportunities to sneak away with a win. We think this is unlikely. The Sharks have dropped their standard over the last two weeks, but we don’t think that will last.

Tip: Cronulla Sharks -11.5 – $1.92 at CrownBet

Sydney Roosters Vs North Queensland Cowboys (Sunday, 14 August at 4PM)

The Roosters did away with the Broncos a couple of week ago. It was unexpected and downright impressive, despite the Broncos clear flaws. The Roosters are one of those team that’s just acting as a punching bag for the top teams late in the season. Their season ended a while ago and now they’re just waiting it out.

On Monday night against the Panthers, they were exactly what we expected. They were never really in the game, but showed fire once the Panthers backed off. Even with the inclusion of Mitchell Pearce and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves this week, they will still lack the intensity until late in the second half.

The last few weeks has shown us that the biggest weakness in the Cowboys system is the lack of depth. They have lost their last two and momentum is clearly down. But they have the ability to boune back.

Its hard to imagine the Roosters winning this one. They have been deplorable this season. If they want any chance of winning, they will have to strike fast and not wait for the Cowboys to slow down. Can’t see that happening.

Tip: North Queensland Cowboys -6.0 – $1.92 at CrownBet

Canberra Raiders Vs Melbourne Storm (Monday, 15 August at 7PM)

Melbourne overtook the Sharks last week and are now sitting on the top of the ladder after beating the Rabbitohs 15-14 in a golden point showdown at AAMI Park. Storm was on the back foot early after conceding the first try, but got the win.

With a top two finish guaranteed, Storm has the ability to take it easy for a couple of weeks. We certainly aren’t expecting this, especially as they are naming the same side as last weekend.

The Raiders thumped the Sharks and Rabbitohs over the last two weeks. In the last five they have faced, and beaten two of the top five teams which sest themselves up for a strong finals showing. We’re expecting they will give Melbourne a run for their money in what will be the most interesting game of the round.

Both team are fully fit and ready to go. A few weeks ago Storm would have been the clear winners, but with the recent form of the Raiders its hard to split them.

Tip: Either team by under 6.5 – $2.70 at CrownBet
