2016 NRL Round 22 Betting Tips

The ‘Hayne Plane’ has landed and he’ll be wearing blue and gold. After a mediocre stint in the NFL and a fruitless jaunt to Fijian Rugby 7’s, Jarryd Hayne is back in the NRL. Despite apparently signing a ‘lifetime deal’ with the Parramatta Eels, Hayne has now signed with the Gold Coast Titans and will make his debut this weekend against the New Zealand Warriors. Let’s take a look at that game and more in our 2016 NRL: Round 22 betting tips.

St George Illawarra Dragons Vs Brisbane Broncos (Thursday, 4 August)

Brisbane were meant to turn it around last weekend. They were supposed to have an easy win against the Roosters and regain the confidence that would see them improve in the build up to the 2016 NRL finals. Unfortunately for Broncos fans, that didn’t happen.

The Broncos season has simply fallen apart. While they remained relatively competitive during the first 20 minutes, they quickly fell apart and were no match for a fast attacking Roosters outfit. After quickly conceding their first try in a matter of minutes, the Broncos where on the back foot from the start. As mentioned last week the Broncos biggest issue of late seems to be their high penalty numbers and unforced errors, 6 and 9 respectively during their 16-32 loss against the Roosters.

Coach Wayne Bennett has made several changes to the Broncos lineup with Josh McGuire returning to prop, with Sam Thaiday and Matt Gillett in the 2nd row. Herman Ese’ese and Joe Ofahengaue have both been omitted.

The Dragons made a late drive against the Bulldogs, scoring two late 2nd half tries before eventually going down 13-10. Despite losing the war, St George was for most accounts winning the battle. They held possession with 7 additional sets and completed 5 more than the Bulldogs. It certainly wasn’t a lack of trying that saw them lose this one.

A +10.5 line was insulting to the Dragons. The Broncos have lost 7 out of their last 10, and certainly don’t look like a premiership threat anymore. While the Dragons have had a season to forget overall, they are sometimes competitive.

Tip: St George Illawarra Dragons +10.5 – $1.94 at CrownBet

Parramatta Eels Vs Many-Warringah Sea Eagles (Friday, 5 August)

Manly has surged toward the tail end of the season, after a slow start the Sea Eagles are currently on a 4-1 streak and are in fantastic form. Dylan Walker was at his best against the Knights last week. The combination of Walker and DCE in the halves is proving the correct move, as they contributed 4 tries to the tally last week.

Nate Myles and Matt Parcell have been named on an extended bench for the Sea Eagles, Addin Fonua-Blake and Siosaia Vave are likely to be omitted.

The Eels have had a season they would soon like to forget. Following Salary Cap breaches, questionable actions by players and executives, you would think things couldn’t get much worse. Well, you’re wrong. Parramatta’s golden child, meant to return home, has instead turned his back on his club.

Struggling in recent weeks the Eels will need to get off to a quick start. Manly are 6-1 when leading at halftime, so the Eels will need to stay involved and not leave their run until late in the second half as they are known to. They will improve defensively with Michael Jennings, Beau Scott and Manu Ma’u having all been named with John Folau and Rory O’Brien missing the cut.

This one will be interesting and closer than expected.

Cronulla Sharks Vs Canberra Raiders (Saturday, 6 August)

The Shark’s streak ended in a spectacular showing on Monday night after heading into the game as the favourites against the Titans. With a fast start Cronulla was looking untouchable. We can only imagine as they came out after halftime they had considered the job done, waiting for the Titans to simply fold into the night. It wasn’t to be. The Titans came out and took over the lead in the first 20 minutes, eventually sending the game into overtime. When neither team could deliver a point the game ended in a draw.

The same Sharks line up will face the Raiders this Saturday and we are confident they will shrug off the Draw and continue on their way to the finals.

The Raiders have found winning form in the last few weeks, currently on a 8-1 win streak and sitting in 3rd position on the ladder. In a single change for the Raiders, Brenko Lee will line up on the wing with his cousin Edrick Lee being omitted.

The Sharks were just a few games into their winning streak the last time these two teams played. The Raiders were unprepared and suffered a 40-16 loss including a double from Benny Barba and a near flawless kicking game from James Maloney. This one will be far tighter but will end in the same result.

Bet On: Cronulla Sharks 1-12 – $2.90 at Ladbrokes

Gold Coast Titans Vs New Zealand Warriors (Sunday, 7 August)

There’s no place to start other than Jarryd Hayne. Well played Titans. Hayne will reportedly be suiting up against the Warriors this weekend. In his first game back in the NRL he will line up with former team mate Nathan Peats who left the Eels earlier this season during the salary cap scandal.

The Titans stunned many last week when they ended the Sharks winning streak and played an exceptional game across the board. Ashley Taylor has been a superstar for the Titans this season averaging 4 points, 46 metres and 17 tackles per game in his first real season of NRL. It will be interesting to watch a halves pairing of Hayne and Taylor over the coming months.

The Warriors won last week in yet another game decided by a golden point – or in this case a golden try. After a tough 9-minute golden point battle, Shaun Johnson crossed the line to give the Warriors a 20-16 victory over the Panthers. Jazz Tevaga has been omitted with Bunty Afoa and Nathaniel Roache being added to an extended bench.

The history between these two clubs is pretty one sided. The Warriors have won 10 of the last 11 including their round 17 battle winning 27-18. This is a 7th Vs 8th battle that neither team can afford to lose. We believe the Titans will elevate after this week’s announcement and will win in a close one.

Bet On: Gold Coast Titans 1-12 – $3.05 at CrownBet
