2016 Indian Premier League Preview

For many the Indian Premier League (IPL) is a bandwagon of cricket entertainment and a great platform to experience the pressure of playing in front of huge Indian crowds. One of the most successful franchise cricket tournaments in the world moves into its ninth season, in what promises to be a season of entertaining action.

IPL divides opinion right at the centre – especially with the latest allegations of spot-fixing that led to the suspension of two of their franchises. However, there is no hiding the fact that for players around the world, the financial lure of IPL is a strong whirlpool of attraction you cannot get away from. And this is why even the England Cricket Board is slowly warming up to the idea of co-existing with the IPL!

With Chennai Super Kings (CSK) out of contention, the doors of opportunity have opened up for the perennial under-achievers Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). With a plethora of T20 legends in their kitty – Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, AB de Villers to name a few, it is puzzling how they could never win the tournament. Odds of $4.00 at William Hill make them a dangerous opponent to look to but the absence of a strong Indian spine could be their Achilles’ heel, as always.

Defending Champions Mumbai Indians (MI) have no such worries though. With a strong Indian presence complementing the foreign contingent, MI will look to defend their title successfully. Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard and Harbhajan Singh are household names in this format but MI will miss Lasith Malinga at the start of the tournament. A lot will depend on how the middle order will fare but at odds of $5.50 at William Hill, they are worth consideration.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will be the first assignment for Jacques Kallis as coach who is boosted by the return of Sunil Narine, who is free to bowl in the tournament. A consistent team, like MI, is their boon with the likes of Andre Russell, Yusuf Pathan and Manish Pandey giving them an aggressive look. Much will depend on the bowling backup provided by local Indians but this is one side capable of going all the way at odds of $7.50 at William Hill.

Coming to the Aussie flavor, watch out for the captaincy skills of David Warner at Hyderabad Sunrisers. Glenn Maxwell and Shaun Marsh will look to firepower the challenge of Kings XI Punjab while Adam Zampa and Travis Head are sure to capture attention if they continue their Big Bash exploits.
