2016 Golden Slipper Preview & Tips

Golden SlipperThe 2016 Golden Slipper is set to be an absolute cracker at Rosehill this weekend as 16 of the country’s juveniles are set to compete for the richest two-year-old race in the world.

The forecast for Sydney is quite good on Saturday which should mean the track is somewhere around the Good 4 mark despite showers during the day on Friday.

These races are always run at a strong tempo and with Extreme Choice, Kiss And Make Up, Scarlet Rain and Astern all capable of leading this looks to be the case once more. I’d expect the Waterhouse pair to lead the field with Astern taking a sit today and Extreme Choice doing the same. The Price runner was sent out to take a sit in the Blue Diamond and although this wasn’t the case given his wide barrier, punters can expect him to sit closer to midfield today from barrier 7. Conversely, Price’s other runner Flying Artie will position much closer to the speed in the Slipper than what he did in the Blue Diamond. He was forced a long way back from his wide draw and from barrier 5 today we shouldn’t see him any worse than midfield.

Defcon will once again go back and attempt to run them all down from his wide draw, while Capitalist, Yankee Rose and Honesty Prevails all draw favourably and will surely get every chance.

The first two in the market look to be in a league of their own but it’s important to remember this is their first time travelling and their first time running the Sydney way, so it’s definitely not as clear cut as some are suggesting.

Extreme Choice’s win in the Diamond was spectacular, however, where he was forced to travel four wide the entire trip and still proved way too good for them. If he handles the Sydney way of going it would be no surprise to see him give this field a good beating too. His stablemate Flying Artie was the only one in the same suburb of him in the Diamond and his run was outstanding too. He was forced about ten wide on the turn and had to come from a mile back. With a good draw today he may be only a length off Extreme Choice on the turn which will give him every chance of turning the tables.

Capitalist suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Kiss And Make Up last start which saw him blow out considerably in the market. If he bounces back to his best he could very well win this, and from barrier 2 he will get every conceivable chance to do so. Gai Waterhouse’s filly was impressive when defeating him, but from barrier 9 it’s possible she could get caught in a speed battle which would be detrimental to her chances of winning.

One filly who stands out at big odds is David Vandyke’s Yankee Rose who ahs the services of Hong Kong superstar Zac Purton. She’s done nothing wrong in her two starts so far – both wins – and defeated the likes of Teleprion and Good Standing in each start. Blinkers go on for the first time here and she looks tuned up to run a big race.

Good Standing for James Cummings looked impressive when winning the Skyline Stakes at his first start back from a spell. His trainer has a good opinion of him and Hugh Bowman retains the ride which is a good sign. He shapes as one to include.

It could also be worth including Honesty Prevails despite her poor showing as the favourite last start. She pulled up with poor post race recovery but draws barrier 6 here which should give her every chance of bouncing back. Her debut win was outstanding.

The Mick Price pair are undoubtedly the one’s to beat in this. Capitalist is the one that can beat them if returns to his best though, and at 10/1 he shapes as a nice each way bet. Yankee Rose the blowout.

1st CAPITALIST
2nd EXTREME CHOICE
3rd FLYING ARTIE
4th YANKEE ROSE
