Precise Air Chipping Norton Stakes 1600m – Group 1

All eyes will be on superstar mare Winx in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes at Randwick on Saturday, and rightly so. The Cox Plate winner opened a generous $1.55 and has since been crunched into $1.30 following her comfortable win in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes a fortnight ago.

Despite the field actually being fairly handy, she really doesn’t have much to compete with given the majority of the field are looking for significantly longer trips than the 1600m today.

On paper, there is absolutely no pace in the race. There are a few possibilities as to who might lead. Dibayani comes up with barrier 1 and has raced up towards the speed in some of his Australian runs. He may use the barrier to lead them up, though I suspect he will take a sit just on the leaders’ heels.

Centre Pivot raced on speed in Brisbane but settled midfield in the Apollo. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him go forward from barrier 9.

However, most likely could be UK Group 2 winner Storm The Stars who makes his Australian debut for Chris Waller. The 4YO led all the way to win the Group 2 Great Voltigeur over 2400m at York.

Caulfield Cup winner Mongolian Khan will settle midfield from barrier 4, with Winx likely to find a spot in midfield too. Preferment, Grand Marshal and Gust Of Wind are all backmarkers, which should leave Hartnell, Who Shot TheBarman, Magic Hurricane and Hauraki to settle worse than midfield.

As aforementioned, Winx is the only horse in the race, other than 60/1 outsider Centre Pivot and possibly Dibayani, that is effective over 1600m so she really should be winning this.

In terms of place chances behind her, I do think that is a pretty thin list of chances too.

I am really interested to see Storm The Stars perform here. Word from the Waller stable is he is working really well on the track, and while he may find the 1600m a bit sharp, they’ve rated him as a very good place chance and I tend to agree.

Dibayani will be better suited to the 1600m than the 1400m of the Apollo and his 2nd up form is considerably better than his first up form. With a good barrier draw I expect him to run well here and he rates as a strong place chance.

Hauraki looks the best of the Godolphin horses to my eye, despite McDonald taking the ride on Hartnell. Hauraki finished off well to grab 3rd in the Apollo, and the wide barrier shouldn’t stop him running another good race. Hartnell is clearly Godolphin’s best chance according to the market, but I am struggling to find confidence in that given his form last prep.

Mongolian Khan will obviously be better at 2400m but he did run very well over 1600m first up last prep in the Makybe Diva, and I suspect he will run on for a good 3rd or 4th here, especially with the good barrier draw.

Outside of those, every other runner is either first up at 1600m or looking for atleast 2000m so it’s hard to make a case for them.

Winx to win this in a canter, but very interested to see Storm The Stars.

1st WINX – $1.35 at Bookmaker
2nd DIBAYANI – $16 at Bookmaker
3rd STORM THE STARS – $26 at Bookmaker

Always gamble responsibily.
