2016 Australian Open Women

All eyes will be on Serena Williams as her quest for a calendar Grand Slam starts in the new season with the first tournament of the season in Australia. Melbourne Park will witness Serena versus rest of the world from the 18th of January till the 31st, in the 2016 Australian Open.

There is no doubt that the central plot in the next two weeks will be whether Serena can bounce back from her shock semi-final defeat in the US Open last year. That loss prevented her from winning the calendar Grand Slam. She hasn’t competed in a competitive full match since that event citing various reasons including exhaustion.

For any player coming into a Grand Slam without an extensive preparation for over four months, it would be a herculean task. But, such has been the dominance of the American that she still starts as the biggest catch. Odds of $3.75 (sportsbet) make her the bookies favorite.

Simona Halep, meanwhile, is ranked number two and would be keen to break the Quarter-Finals jinx at the Melbourne Park. She reached the last eight in 2014 and 2015 and is no doubt keen to go deeper in the tournament this time around. Though she is considered to be the logical competitor to Serena, it would take a lot from the Romanian to give a fight to Serena. Odds of $9.0 (sportsbet) on her lifting the title, vindicate this thought.

The 2008 Champion Maria Sharapova will continue to be a fan favorite at the Australian Open where she has enjoyed successful returns. It will be a huge test, though, of her ability to put it past Serena – especially her mental aspect of the game. Her low ranking of five would mean that she would face Serena a step earlier, in the semis itself. The Russian isn’t expected to go past Serena and odds of $10.0 (sportsbet) is a reflection of that sentiment.

Of the others, Victoria Azarenka could be the dark horse after winning the Brisbane International title recently. She is placed in the same half of the draw as Halep which could see her potentially reaching the finals. She is $5.0 (sportbet) for the title. The Australian interest will be spearheaded by Samantha Stosur and Daria Gavrilova (who was last year’s WTA Newcomer of the year). Also watch out for Garbine Muguruza who could be an outsider for the tournament.

Who can stop Serena? This is the biggest question for many tennis enthusiasts before action kicks-off in the Australian Open 2016.
