2016 AFL Round 1

Welcome to Bet King’s first AFL betting tips article of 2016! Once again we will be offer our best betting picks all year long, starting with Round 1!

Richmond vs Carlton (Thursday, March 23)

The season opener for 2016 sees Richmond take on Carlton at the MCG on Thursday evening. It has been well documented that Richmond has many key outs (including Brett Deledio) and while that is a significant factor, we think this has just given us a bit of value to bet on Richmond to win in a somewhat competitive game. The Blues will put up a better fight than most of their performances last year. They have their new coach Brendan Bolton shaking things up and a couple of new recruits including the much lauded No.1 draft pick Jacob Weitering. I’m not sure they can win this game, but they should be able to keep it close, so we don’t mind the look of the big line.

Tip: Carlton at the line (+27.5) – $1.92 at CrownBet

Gold Coast vs Essendon (Saturday, March 24)

The Round 1 clash between the Gold Coast Suns and the Essendon Bombers might be the only time we see a line this low against the red and black. Essendon are fielding their sub-par top-up filled team of players who likely wouldn’t be playing AFL this week if it wasn’t for the drugs scandal. The Suns do have their problems, but Gary Ablett is reportedly back fit and ready to play and the game is up north. Until the Bombers prove otherwise, we have to take lines this low against them.

Tip: Gold Coast at the line (-34.5) – $1.92 at CrownBet

Port Adelaide vs St Kilda (Sunday, March 25) – BEST BET

Sunday sees the Saints head to South Australia to take on what we think will be a resurgent Port Adelaide in 2016. We just think they will be too quick and their attack will be too strong for the Saints. They have ex-Sun Charlie Dixon coming in and with Chad Wingard and Robbie Gray also kicking goals, I don’t know how the Saints can win this game. There is a bit of hype around Port Adelaide prior to Round 1 and we are thinking they will take this by the scruff of the neck after a disappointing 2015. They have so much potential and they Should start to fulfil that potential here in Round 1.

Tip: Port Adelaide at the line (-29.5) – $1.92 at CrownBet

Hawthorn vs Geelong (Monday, March 26)

Easter Monday brings about it’s usual Geelong v Hawthorn game and Round 1’s matchup might be the most interesting for these two teams since the peak of their rivalry. Everyone wants to know if Hawthorn still have it. Could they possibly push for a fourth premiership in a row? And will Geelong’s new recruits like Patrick Dangerfield bring them back to the success of their hayday?

There is a lot of hype around Geelong’s list management over the summer. If the media is to be believed, Geelong will be winning the flag this year on the back of Dangerfield’s inclusion. We think they could be found out this week. The Hawks mean business and still have the deepest list in the AFL. They should win this in a relatively close game.

Tip: Hawthorn Under 39.5 – $2.20 at CrownBet
