2016-17 EPL: Liverpool vs Tottenham Betting Tips

February 10, 2017 by Posted in Soccer Tips

Liverpool host Tottenham in this weekend’s EPL game of the round at 4.30am Sunday morning. With Tottenham ferociously hunting down Chelsea at the top of the table and Liverpool fighting to stay in champions league contention, it makes this a huge game for both teams. We take a closer look at the game and give tips in our preview below.

A 1-0 win might not look like a very strong performance, however, Tottenham decimated their opponents Middlesbrough last weekend, maintaining 65% possession and amassing a whopping 17 shots. They will hope to bring that defensive and possession football mindset into the game against Liverpool Sunday morning.

Liverpool lead the league with 52 goals scored on the season so far. Only two of them, however, have come from counter attacking plays, they like to maintain possession of the ball and score from open play and set pieces. It makes it tough when they come up against a team like Tottenham, who are just better at playing possession football and like to hold back and wait for play to unfold.

In all Spurs games this year, the ball averages just 27% time in their forward third, which is the 5th lowest in the league, this means that they love to stifle attacking teams like Liverpool into making a mistake before they pounce.

Liverpool are also in the midst of some horrendous form. After being in a title challenging position earlier in the season, the Reds have slumped hard in the past few months. They’ve only managed one win over their past 10 games across all competitions, and life won’t get any easier this weekend, with Spurs playing completely contrasting football.

It’s been 11 games since the Spurs have been beaten in all competitions, their last loss came at the hands of Manchester United all the way back in December.

It’s very much a battle of offence vs defence in this game, as we have the highest scoring offence in Liverpool vs the most stringent defence in Tottenham, who have allowed just 16 goals on the season so far. The saying goes ‘defence wins championships’ that notion combined with Liverpool’s shocking run lately suggest that the Spurs could come away with a win here, or at least a draw.

TIP: Tottenham (draw no bet) – $2.39 at Sportsbet

After missing almost 2 months though injury earlier in the season, Philippe Coutinho played his first full 90-minute tilt against Hull on the weekend. Now that he’s back to full fitness, he’s a massive chance to find the back of the net, and he’s a regular free kick taker for the Reds.

TIP: Philippe Coutinho anytime goal scorer – $3.55 at Unibet
