Round 16 of the 2016-17 A-League season kicks off Thursday, the 19th of January with Melbourne City and the Central Coast Mariners squaring off in Melbourne. The game headlines this weeks multi of the round below!
As we mentioned, Melbourne City will be the cornerstone of out Round 16 multi this week. Coming off a few lacklustre matches, Melbourne City will be hunting for a win this week to keep them in contention of the minor premiership and a good finals seed. Having won only two of their last ten matches, they are due for a win in this one and come up against the right opponent on the right ground to capture victory.
The second leg of our multi will be the other Melbourne team, the mighty Victory, to travel to Perth on Saturday night and come away with a win. The Victory were better than their 3-0 defeat to the Phoenix on Tuesday night would suggest. They dominated possession for the majority of the game and allowed two late goals when attacking hard to equalise. I like the in form team in the comp to travel to Perth and beat a struggling Glory team on the back of some outstanding play by the likes of Bersat Berisha, Marco Rojas and James Troisi.
The Western Sydney Wanderers looked dominant in their game against ladder leaders Sydney FC on the weekend. Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t turn their dominance into scoreboard pressure, and left the derby with a 0-0 draw. They come up against a much easier opponent, at home, this weekend in the Newcastle Jets and if they carry any sort of form from their last match into this one I like them to take it comfortably.
Leg 4 is just a little odds booster as top of the table Sydney FC play cellar dwellers Adelaide United in Sydney. This should be a walkover for the Sydney team, who have allowed only 7 goals in 15 games so far this season. Adelaide have only scored 12 in their 15 games, so as long as Sydney can find the back of the net once, their defence should easily hold up for a W.
