2015 Zipping Classic Preview & Tip

Rising RomanceWith Dandino scratched from the Group 2 Zipping Classic it now leaves just 7 runners in the $300,000 feature which we will be taking a look at with our racing betting tips.

The race looks set to be run at a really moderate tempo with Don Doremo seemingly the only leader in the field. He’s settled in the first 3 at 4 of his past 5 starts and with the lack of speed on paper they should be looking to run the race to suit him best. Rising Romance tends to do a lot of her racing on the speed so from barrier 7 she will be looking to come across and settle in a handy position. Who Shot Thebarman may be able to get into a nice position on the back of the leaders from barrier 5, and Sertorius may join him slightly closer to the speed than what he was in the Melbourne Cup due to the small field. Kirramosa, Tall Ship and Do You Remember should bring up the back of the field upon settling.

With the scratching of one of the main hopes Dandino, there leaves 3 winning chances to my eye.

RISING ROMANCE was very poor in the Caulfield Cup but we later found out that she was ‘in season’. There were 2 mares ‘in season’ that day, Rising Romance and Fenway, who both came out and ran 2nd in Group 1s at their next start, so we can completely forget she went around. Her 2nd to Gailo Chop in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes proved she was back at her best. With the lack of speed on paper, and the small field engaged, this could come down to which horse has the best turn of foot, and that belongs to Rising Romance.

TALL SHIP is now the only Darren Weir trained horse in the race. Unlike most others in this race, Tall Ship has only had the 4 runs so far this preparation and his last run put the writing on the wall that he was ready to win. Steps up sharply in distance to 2400m here where he is undefeated from 2 attempts. He will be hard to beat.

The final winning chance is KIRRAMOSA, though her value is gone now with the scratching of Dandino. Kirramosa had been crying out for extra ground in her earlier runs this campaign, and when she stepped up to the 2400m of the Bendigo Cup she ran a cracker behind The Offer. She stepped up sharply from 1600m to the 2400m there, so with that run under her belt, and staying at 2400m, she rates well here.

Of course you can never rule out the genius that is Chris Waller, but Who Shot Thebarman is suited better to the longer journey and dropping back from 3200m to 2400m is a huge concern so I’ll be playing around him today.

1st RISING ROMANCE
2nd KIRRAMOSA
3rd TALL SHIP
