2015 Tour de France Preview

July 3, 2015 by Posted in Betting Tips

Tour de FranceThe weekend of 4th July will see 198 riders embark on the 102nd Tour de France. This event is without a doubt the most gruelling and spectacular bike race in the world. This edition of the most watched and celebrated cycling event in the world will start with a short, technical time trial through Utrecht.

The 22-day, 2,000-plus miles of riding will test every bit of the riders’ physical and mental strength. The most important question for followers will be – who will be wearing the Yellow Jersey on the Champs Elysees on the July 26th?

It is difficult to see beyond a group of contenders for the Jersey. Alberto Contador, Chris Froome, Vincenzo Nibali and Nairo Quintana look better equipped than the rest to grab the title.

Contador is the pick of those considering his outstanding current form. He won the Giro d’Italia at the end of May and then returned to racing to win the Route du Sud in mid-June. He has only once finished outside the top five in grand tours that he has finished and is a strong contender this year. Ladbrokes offer odds of $4.50 on his victory and that would be our recommended betting play.

Nibali is the defending champion and will be desperate to keep the Jersey for himself. His recent lack of wins is a concern but his performance on the Tour last year should make him a serious player to watch out for. Odds offered by Ladbrokes for his victory are $5.50.

Froome got his challenge back on track with a victory at the Criterium du Dauphine. First week challenges last year hobbled his challenge and the 30-year old Briton would like to avoid those misfortunes. He is the betting market favorite with odds of $3.00 at Ladbrokes.

For some of the critics, the Colombian Quintana is the outstanding favorite for the Jersey. But he’s only raced for four days in the past two months. However, he spent most of that spell in altitude training on his home roads. Odds of $3.25 are offered by Ladbrokes.

Of the rest, Thibaut Pinot, who finished third overall last year, looks a good bet to stretch the contenders to their limits. The mountain-heavy route should ideally suit the Spanish veterans Joaquim Rodriguez and Alejandro Valverde but it is difficult to see them winning the Tour.
