2015 Rugby World Cup Tips: England vs Australia

Michael CheikaHosts England face Australia in an encounter that is crucial for their progress in the 2015 Rugby World Cup. This Pool ‘A’ match will be played at Twickenham at 5:00am AEST on Sunday morning.

England is in a very delicate position with their progress hinging ever so lightly on this result. Having lost to Wales earlier in the tournament, a loss to the Wallabies will knock the hosts out of the competition. No sole World Cup hosts have been eliminated in the pool stage and England certainly wouldn’t want to be the first.

This is the result of their demoralizing 28-25 loss to Wales last weekend. The home side was in command for most part of that game only to let a ten-point lead slip and put their own hopes in jeopardy.

Stuart Lancaster is under serious pressure and has responded by handing Jonathan Joseph and Ben Morgan a return to the starting line-up. Owen Farrell is retained at fly-half as England looks to improve their performance. But, facing the Wallabies in a must-win game is not something the hosts would cherish.

Michael Cheika (pictured) has transformed the Wallabies in the past year and has them back as one of the tournament contenders. The Aussies are yet to be properly stretched in this World Cup having won both the games they played so far.

Wallabies failed to pick-up a bonus point against Fiji but the second string team routed Uruguay 65-3 to set the tone for the game against England. Cheika has made 14 changes to the side from Uruguay game and is confident of putting it across England.

The Wallabies have an experienced side compared to England and that could turn the tide for them. Only Dan Cole in the England team has more than 50 caps while Australia have seven such players. Even the traditional weakness of scrummaging has been overcome by Cheika. Australia now has an edge even in scrums.

Recent history, though, offers hope for the hosts as they have won their last three World Cup meetings with Australia. But, the pressure this time is much more than any of those matches – more than the 2003 final in the Aussies’ own backyard.

England will try to come out firing to prove a point as their tournament is on the line. But, the Wallabies have already shown steel in their performances this summer even overturning deficits. As such, it would not be a bad punt to back the Wallabies at odds of $2.15 at Sportsbet. There is value in backing England/Australia to lead at half time/full time at odds of $7.00 at Sportsbet.

With England under pressure and Australia looking to seize the opportunity, the stage is set for an enthralling match.
