All Blacks Rugby World CupWe started our Rugby World Cup (RWC) build-up with our focus on the previous editions of the World Cup. In this article, we look at the top contenders for this year’s trophy.

Traditionally, the World Cup is dominated by Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and England. But recent results and form indicate that Australia, New Zealand, England or Ireland could be walking away with the Webb Ellis Cup.

The second-ranked Wallabies are one of the most successful at the World Cup stage but are rated outsiders for the cup. There is no shortage of passion or motivation for the team to come up trumps. The recent victory against arch rivals New Zealand should hold them in good stead ahead of the tournament.

The Aussies last won the World Cup in 1999, incidentally in England. Although they return to their happy hunting ground, the Wallabies will have to raise their performance by several notches to win their third RWC title.

Prediction:Semi-finals (Odds to reach semis: $2.20 at CrownBet)

New Zealand

The top ranked ‘All Blacks’ are the overwhelming favorites for any World Cup. They have lost only two games in the last four years. In Richie McCaw and Dan Carter, they have two of the best players in the world.

The fast free-flowing play of the All Blacks is a treat to watch for the neutrals and at the same time is difficult for their opponents. Barring any injury or loss of form, they look well-oiled to win another title.

Prediction: Finals (Odds to reach final: $1.62 at CrownBet)

The hosts may be coming into the tournament on the back of some mixed performances but are a leading contender to lift the Webb Ellis Cup. Their home ground Twickenham is a place they relish and they also possess a highly-disciplined forward pack.

The worry for England, though, is to manage the home expectations as well as find a balance to match the strength of their forwards. The Springboks lurking in the quarter-finals could be a challenge too.

Prediction:Semi-finals (Odds to reach semis: $1.62 at Sportsbet)

The third-ranked Ireland has been one of the most improved sides in the past two years. They defeated the Springboks and Wallabies, won the Six Nations twice in a row and looked good enough to challenge the might of the All Blacks.

The lethal pairing of Jonathan Sexton and Colin Murray could be too hot to handle for any opponent while the attacking backs would be tricky too. If they play to potential, reaching semis isn’t beyond reach. Any progress beyond, will depend on how they tackle the bigger teams.

Prediction:Semi-finals (Odds to reach semis: $1.83 at Sportsbet)
