2015 Rugby World Cup Preview

2015 Rugby World CupStarting Friday, 20 teams from across the globe will try with all their might to win the Rugby World Cup crown. The games will be played across England but the reverberations will be felt in all corners of the world.

Defending champions New Zealand will start as overwhelming favorites to retain the crown. The squad is very experienced and is clearly the team to beat. The All Blacks have led the World Rugby rankings for the past six years and enter any tournament as favorites. But, the fact that they haven’t won the World Cup outside their home territory will be something in the back of their minds.

Hosts England will hope to convert their recent encouraging wins into trophy success. There still is a sense of uncertainty about this young England squad. The pressure of matching fans’ expectations may weigh heavy on them. Their chances haven’t been helped by drawing the ‘group of death’ which also contains contenders in Wales and Australia.

The recent wins against New Zealand and South Africa should help the Wallabies as they bid for their third World Cup. They have a tricky group to contend, though, with England, Wales and Fiji making the quartet anybody’s call, but Australia should be good enough to advance and give the All Blacks a serious challenger later in the tournament.

Of the others, South Africa continues to be a perennial threat and would be a dangerous opponent for anyone in the quarter-finals. Also Ireland will be coming with huge expectations having won back-to-back Six Nations, and they could be in line for a semi-final berth if things go to plan.

At the other end of the spectrum, it would be an excellent stage for the minnows to announce themselves. United States could be the surprise package having come better prepared than ever. Japan has improved vastly over the last 5 years and could provide a shock or two.

Going back to predictions, every World Cup will have the usual suspects in the All Blacks topping everyone’s prediction list. At odds of $2.20 at Sportsbet, it’s hard to tip against the All Blacks going all the way.
The Wallabies recently defeated the All Blacks and that should build upon their own confidence. Odds of $8.00 at Sportsbet make them outsiders but perhaps worth a small speculative bet. The hosts England are better placed at odds of $5.50 at Sportsbet while a good value team to watch out will be Ireland at odds of $10.00 at Sportsbet.

It is difficult to see beyond the All Blacks for the winner’s trophy, but the Rugby World Cup is a long competition and anything can potentially happen!
