2015 Inglis Sprint Preview & Tips

HellbentThe Inglis Sprint sees 13 three-year-olds line up over 1100m at Royal Randwick on Saturday in a race worth $250,000 – the same amount on offer for the Group 2 Villiers Stakes.

Randwick received 6mm of rain on Wednesday night which has it currently rated a Soft 5 but with very warm weather and clear skies forecast in the lead up to Saturday, we should see the track rated in the Good range.

The race looks to have a decent amount of speed in it with BITBURG and MOMENT OF MUSIC the two horses most likely to share the lead. Moment Of Music should find the rail from barrier 6 and from barrier 14 Bitburg should cross over to settle to his outside.

Bring A Secret should settle on the rail behind the leaders, and I expect LUCKY FISH will settle in 4th one off the rail, which means he will get the run of the race. DINGHU MOUNTAIN will get a lovely trail in midfield along with the favourite HELLBENT.

The dynamics of this race depend on what those horses drawn wide choose to do. STOKER, LADY JIVAGO, INVINCIBLE HEART and LADY SNIPER have all showed the ability to race right up on the speed in the past so it will be interesting to see if any of those choose to burn forward, in which case the tempo will really be on!

The obvious horse to beat in this race, and the one all the early money has come for, is HELLBENT. Two starts ago he should have finished much closer to Counterattack who has since run 3rd in the Coolmoore Stud Stakes, which is when we last saw Hellbent too. That form in a race like this is far superior, especially under set weight conditions. He should enjoy a great run in midfield off a hot tempo.

There are a couple of progressive types that appeal at double figure odds, though.

Chris Waller’s runner DINGHU MOUNTAIN has only had the four career starts and the last of those was a runner up finish on a heavy track. However, the blinkers get applied for the first time here and it’s a method that has worked well for Waller in the past. Though it was only at Hawkesbury, LUCKY FISH’s first up win was impressive and he won a trial leading into that over Echo Gal and Aussies Love Sport. The race is going to be set up for those getting a trail off the speed, so he looks suited from barrier 3.

Others suited by the speed should be LADY JIVAGO, who gets the tongue tie on after her failure last start, and INVINCIBLE HEART, who comes from Melbourne having won 3 of his last 5 races.

Expect the fireworks to be on early here – 1100m races are always quick from the second the gates open and with plenty of speed from both inside and outside barriers, we should see those settling off the pace running on.

This certainly looks the race for HELLBENT, but there will be plenty of interest in the minor placings behind him.

1st HELLBENT ($2.20 at Ladbrokes)
2nd DINGHU MOUNTAIN ($13 at Sportsbet)
3rd IVINCIBLE HEART ($7 at Sportsbet)
4th LUCKY FISH ($14 at CrownBet)
