2015 Davis Cup Final Preview: Belgium vs Great Britain

Andy MurrayIn a déjà vu of sorts, Andy Murray will feel the weight of expectations from a whole nation as he leads Great Britain in the Davis Cup final against Belgium this weekend. The tie is set to be played in Ghent, Belgium on indoor clay and promises to go beyond the usual range of excitement in Davis Cup.

Belgium are in their first ever final since 1904 and will look to carry their dream run on home turf. They chose indoor clay to blunt the powers of their rival camp, and most notably, Murray. Britain has won the Davis Cup nine times but are desperate to end a 79-year title drought. Murray knows all about carrying the hopes of an entire nation, as he has done so in many Grand Slams thus far in his career.

The world number two, and his brother Jamie, have propelled Britain throughout the tournament. Andy scored vital points in the singles ties and then teamed up with his elder brother to win the doubles. That has been the template for Britain throughout this year, with the second singles player almost reduced to being nominal.

The finals, beginning on Friday, promises to be more of the same where Britain will start as warm favourites at $1.20 at Sportsbet. Youngster Kyle Edmund, James Ward and the hard-hitting Dominic Inglot complete the squad for Britain but all eyes will be on the Murray siblings. It may boil down to how quickly Andy adapts and switches to indoor clay.

Carrying the home nation’s hopes will be the World number 16 David Goffin who propelled the team and exceeded expectations this year. He has won his past six matches and could be their best bet in singles. Steve Darcis is not a bad option to have as your second player while Ruben Bemelmans and Kimmer Coppejans complete the squad for Belgium.

The chances of Belgium hinge on how well Goffin can carry himself against Andy Murray in the singles. The doubles team could find itself short of the Murray siblings, but the intense Davis Cup environment, and huge home support, could possibly upset many calculations. Darcis could prove handy in the final rubber but will the tie be alive at that time?

Andy Murray looks good to lead Britain to victory and a final score of 3-1 could be in the offing.
