2015 Ashes: England vs Australia 2nd Test Preview

Brad HaddinEngland will take on Australia in the second Test match of the 2015 Ashes at Lord’s from Thursday, 16th July and we take a look at the game in our latest cricket betting tips article.

Not even the most ardent of English fans would have predicted the magnitude of the first Test win. They won the first Test by 169 runs dominating the Aussies in all departments. Joe Root’s brilliant 134 in the first innings led them to a respectable score and then the bowlers put in a considerable effort to get a lead of 123 runs.

There was no letting off in the second innings and Australia were bundled out for 242 chasing a target of 412 runs. For England, there were many positives with almost every player making a contribution in either or both innings.

Root continues to be their main stay in the batting department as they head into the second Test while Stokes and Ali could be the surprise packages in bowling. It remains to be seen if this confident England side playing with refreshing aggression can cope up with the favorites tag.

For Australia, there is everything to play for. Being humbled at Cardiff, they can’t afford to lose further ground at Lord’s. Below-par performances from almost everyone hurt them throughout the Test match. To add insult to injury, their fielding was very ordinary – the let off by Brad Haddin (pictured) against Joe Root on zero in the first innings being the abysmal low.

Haddin will be out of the second Test because of personal reasons making way for his New South Wales team mate Peter Nevill. The big question is on his capability to turn up on the biggest stage of Test cricket. Shane Watson will likely be dropped and replaced by Mitchell Marsh. Question marks remain on the fitness of Mitchell Starc too but going by the last training session, he should be fit to start.

Lord’s generally is a test of character for any visiting side. Bowlers tend to struggle adjusting to the slope but accurate pacers like Glenn McGrath always found success here. This should be a cause for hope to what Josh Hazelwood can bring to this Australian squad.

Michael Clarke and his team can expect the Lord’s pitch to have more pace and bounce. It could help bring their main weapon Mitchell Johnson back into play. England are the favourites to win the Test but Australia will try with all their might to win this. The Australian win is being offered at odds of $2.40 at CrownBet.

Steven Smith’s form with the bat hurt the Aussies in the first Test and the gritty right hander would love to make amends at Lord’s. Odds of $4.00 at Sportsbet to be the top Aussie batter in the 1st innings is highly enticing.

Any Ashes Test match is exciting to look forward to and with context like this the Lord’s Test match should keep us all engrossed.
