Vasyl Lomachenko and Jorge Linares Prepare for Biggest Battle of 2018

Jorge Linares

The lightweight battle between Vasyl Lomachenko and Jorge Linares has gone somewhat under the radar, despite it being arguably the best fight of the year so far.

Stylish Venezuelan Linares will put his WBA lightweight title, as well as the coveted Ring Magazine belt, on the line against Ukrainian maestro Lomachenko on Saturday, May 12th, in what is sure to be an incredible clash for boxing purists.

Both men have plenty on the line and still much to prove, despite the pair having risen to prominence over recent years with their respective successes across different divisions.

Linares finds himself regarded as the $5.00 outsider in the latest boxing betting from bet365 heading into arguably the biggest bout of the year so far, while Lomachenko is a clear favourite to have his hand held aloft following the scrap. This is in spite of the former amateur great being the one to move up in weight for the encounter.

Reigning and defending champion ‘The King’ Linares parted ways with long-standing trainer and mentor Ismael Salas ahead of this high-profile match-up, a strange move considering the success the pair enjoyed together.

But his former coach was instead involved in the build-up and training camp duties with Britain’s former cruiserweight and heavyweight world champion David Haye, as he took on Liverpudlian Tony Bellew in their awaited rematch in London.

It’s a move that could come back to hurt Linares, with Salas being a strong figure to have in any fighter’s corner during the course of a bout, particularly with his impressive understanding of gameplans and tactics inside the squared-circle.

Of course, Linares still has all the talent and abilities capable of causing what would be a big upset at the world famous Madison Square Garden in New York City for his latest ring outing. But ‘Loma’ represents probably the toughest test of his long-standing and illustrious career to date.

In previous battles with southpaw opponents, the South American has struggled to fully get into his usually clinical rhythm, including against Britain’s Luke Campbell last year. Although, he did manage to earn a split decision success in that highly entertaining affair in California, at The Forum.

Lomachenko will pose an even greater threat than any other southpaw he has faced off with, though, after storming through the professional ranks since his explosive debut back in October 2013.

The two-division world champion is seeking a slice of history in this potentially epic encounter in the Big Apple, as he attempts to become the quickest fighter to have ever won world titles in three different weight classes.
‘Hi-Tech’ looks set to do exactly that in this massive match-up, possessing all the tools needed to outwork and ultimate defeat Linares.

On the back of that comfortable success against fellow two-time Olympic Gold medallist Guillermo Rigondeaux, he is flying high on momentum and confidence, and looks more than capable of rallying to his most impressive career victory to date at the expense of fan favourite Linares.
