Cricket Betting: South Africa vs Australia 2nd Test Preview

March 8, 2018 by Posted in Cricket Tips

It was a Test match that had a bit of everything that you expect from an Australia-South Africa encounter. A bit of spice on and off the field, twists and turns, collapses, and even the visiting team domination to mark an exciting start to the four-match Test series.

Australia won emphatically and the 118-run victory margin was a stark reminder of the difference between the two sides at the moment – both in quality and the mindset. With literally no time to think in between, both sides get on the field at the St. George’s Park in Port Elizabeth for the 2nd Test from March 9th – 13th.

South Africa – can they ride on the momentum?

The Proteas may have lost the first match, but ironically, they would feel a bit upbeat coming into this game. The primary reason for that is the fact that their mindset in Durban improved with each day and by the end of the fifth, they were ready to compete!
Wary of providing a pitch that suit opponents, South Africa went for a turning track in Durban where Keshav Maharaj prospered with nine wickets in the match. However, their own batsmen struggled to impose in the first innings and it is safe to say that they lost the battle in the first two days!
It was one of their tyros – Aiden Markram, who led the counter attack in the second innings and together with Quinton de Kock gave them a sense of respectability in the defeat. However, the hosts will be the first to admit there is nothing to be gained in a moral victory!

Australia – top dogs!

It is a testimony to their aggressive mindset that Australia looked in control throughout the game – even when Markram was stroking with impunity. It was Mitchell Starc’s brilliance with the ball – nine in the match – that rattled the hosts. With his ability to swing the ball – both old and new – at will, Starc was a menace throughout!
There were contributions with the bat, all around, and Steve Smith would be happy that his failures have not hampered his side much. The settled look to their side makes the Aussies favourites once again and with such belief, it will take some doing to stop them in their tracks!

Australia have won three and lost three of their six Tests played at Port Elizabeth. However, they have won only one of their last four matches here.
This isn’t a great hunting ground for the Proteas who have won 12 and lost 11 of their 28 Tests played, drawing the remaining five.
Recent form of the Proteas, though, is slightly better as they remain unbeaten in their last five Tests played here (W4, D1).

Key players

After such a hue and cry over their acrimonious sledging battle in Durban, De Kock and Warner are sure to give it their all in Port Elizabeth. With both players known not to cede an inch to the opponents, this could be interesting for a neutral cricket lover!

Australia looked in ominous form in the first Test, particularly with the ball, back them to win at odds of $2.05 (Sportsbet).

TIP: Australia to win – $2.05 at Sportsbet

A.B de Villiers was extremely impressive in the first innings in Durban but unfortunately ran out of partners, look for him to carry on his good form here and score a fifty in the first innings at odds of $2.50 (Ladbrokes).

TIP: A.B de Villiers to score 50 in first innings – $2.50 at Ladbrokes
