2018 AFL Round 5 Betting Tips

It was a tough round for SmitTips in Round 4, but I’m confident of bouncing back this weekend with a big Round 5. There are some huge games coming up with a lot of value on offer, so let’s get into it. Be sure to follow @SmitTips new twitter account for all things betting and sport!

Sydney Swans VS Adelaide Crows (Friday, 7:50PM AEST)
Round 5 kicks off on Friday Night in a blockbuster battle between the Swans and the Crows. Despite a tough draw to start the season the Swans sit in 6th position with 3 wins and 1 loss. They were able to grind out an impressive win against a spirited Bulldogs outfit in Round 4 on the back of another Buddy Franklin master class.

The Crows were also dealt a tough draw to start the season and find themselves at 2-2 after four rounds. It was a disgraceful performance by the Crows in Round 4, where they got blown out by 48 points at home against the Magpies in trying conditions. The Crouch brothers absences in midfield is really hurting them inside, and Tex Walker and Eddie Betts have struggled to get involved in the early rounds.

Smit expects the Swans to get the job done on Friday Night with Buddy Franklin helping himself to another bag of goals.

TIP: Swans margin win (1-39) – $2.10 at Sportsbet
VALUE: Lance Franklin to kick 4 or more goals and Swans win – $3.25 at Ladbrokes

Port Adelaide Power VS Geelong Cats (Saturday, 7:40PM AEST)
There’s an interesting Saturday Night fixture taking place in Adelaide this weekend, with the Power hosting the Cats. The Power are coming off their first loss of the season, falling to the Bombers at Etihad Stadium in Round 4. Robbie Gray (39 disposals, 10 clearances) was spectacular inside and out, but didn’t have any mates on the day.

The Cats are 2-2 through the first 4 rounds and are fresh off of a 47-point win against the Saints last weekend. Although it was a confident win in the end the Cats were far from impressive against the lowly rated Saints. Ablett is expected to return to the lineup this weekend and will need to have a big impact if they’re to upset the Power at the ‘Portress’.

Smit see’s the Power running out victorious on Saturday Night, covering the 2-goal line in the process.

TIP: Power at the line (-11.5) – $1.92 at CrownBet
VALUE: Ollie Wines to have 30 or more disposals and Port Adelaide win the match – $3.25 at Ladbrokes

Melbourne Demons VS Richmond Tigers (Tuesday, 7:25PM AEST)
Tuesday Night football makes a return in Round 5 with the Demons taking on the Tigers at the MCG. The Demons were humiliated by the Hawks last weekend, conceding 16 of the last 17 goals of the match to lose by 67 points. With their focus on containing Tom Mitchell (24 disposals), it was the other Hawk midfielders who made their mark as they completely outgunned them in the stoppages.

The Tigers were ruthless in their Round 4 win over the Lions, demolishing them 110-17. Their pressure and attack on the contest was back to their brilliant best, and they look to be the team to beat once again in 2018. Dustin Martin showed off his versatility up forward, bagging himself 6 goals from 17 touches, while Dion Prestia (23 disposals) made a successful return from injury.

Smit is bullish about the Tigers in this one, expecting them to cover the small line with ease.

TIP: Tigers at the line (-13.5) – $1.92 at Sportsbet
VALUE: Jack Riewoldt to kick 3 or more goals and Richmond win the match – $3.50 at Ladbrokes

Collingwood Magpies VS Essendon Bombers (Wednesday, 3:20PM AEST)
The Magpies and Bombers will play out the last game of Round 5 on Wednesday in an Anzac Day blockbuster. The Magpies notched one of their best wins in recent memory in Round 4, defeating last season’s runners up by 48 points in Adelaide. Steele Sidebottom and Brodie Grundy led the charge, while young gun Jaidyn Stephenson was superb with 5 goals.

The Bombers also claimed a great win in Round 4, defeating the Power by 22 points at Etihad Stadium. It was an impressive return to form for new Don Jake Stringer, who claimed 4 goals from his 13 disposals. Zach Merrett (29 disposals) was also able to find a lot of ball, putting a stop to his disappointing start to 2018.

The Magpies are the best 2-2 team in the competition at the moment and Smit thinks they’re ready to go 3-2. Take the Pies at their small line.

TIP: Magpies at the line (-2.5) – $1.92 at CrownBet
