2017 AFL Finals: Week 2 Betting Tips

While it was a great weekend of football viewing, particularly the closing game between Port Adelaide and West Coast, our betting tips were a little off as we hit on just 1/4 tips. Week 2 of the AFL finals promises to be another cracker with two big semi-finals taking place. We preview both games and give our betting tips below.

AFL Finals: Week 2 Betting Tips

Geelong vs Sydney (Friday 7.50pm AEST)
What a performance by the Swans on Saturday night. We predicted it to be a much closer contest after Essendon had nearly beaten the regular season but the Swans absolutely pulverised them from the word go and walked away with a 65-point win. The cream rose to the top for the Swans as the experienced heads of Buddy Franklin, Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dan Hannebery all dominated in the win.

The Cats were very disappointing against the Tigers at the MCG on Friday night and are now just one loss away from going out in straight sets. The top Cats in Dangerfield, Duncan and Selwood all played well but they just couldn’t get enough out of the supporting cast to match the Tigers who were good from top to bottom.

The bookies have the Swans as heavy 17-point favourites for the matchup after the two teams performances on the weekend and we tend to agree with them here. While the Cats may seem healthy on paper, we think there are some niggling injuries that have been keeping them from playing at their best and their depth just can’t match that of the Swans.

Sydney were big 46 points winners over the Cats back in Round 20 and that was at Simonds Stadium, where the Cats were, up until that stage, undefeated. If the Cats really put up a fight we can see them covering the 17-point line so we’ll take Sydney at the margin here.

TIP: Sydney to win by 1-39 – $2.05 at CrownBet

Greater Western Sydney vs West Coast Eagles (Saturday 7.25pm AEST)
The Eagles weren’t quite as impressive as the Swans in their elimination final, but they did get over the line, albeit in an extra time showdown against the Power. In one of the best games we’ve seen all season, Eagle Luke Shuey kicked a great goal after the siren to hand West Coast the win and advance to yet another semi-final.

The Giants had the toughest task in football Thursday night as they travelled to Adelaide to take on the Crows. They were thoroughly outplayed from the outset and while they looked like gaining some momentum back in the second quarter, all hope was lost as the rain began to fall and the Crows extended the margin.

We thought the midfield depth of the Giants would be too much for that of the Crows but the Crouch brothers in particular stood up in the absence of Rory Sloane to dominate in the middle of the ground. It’s rare that a midfield as good and as deep as the Giants has two bad games in a row and the weekend marked just the second time all season that they had lost back to back games.

The Giants get an extra two days to prepare for the match which should give them a massive advantage over some of the older midfielders in the West Coast line-up. Once again we like the favourite at the smaller margin here.

TIP: Greater Western Sydney to win by 1-39 – $2 at Sportsbet
